It was perceived by the community to be a sad day when it was announced in 1989 that the town’s Post Office was to close. A negative turned to positive action where funds were raised to purchase the Post Office and Post Masters house. The Post Office was refurbished and the Medical Centre officially opened on the 1st June 1991. Today it is run by the Coast to Coast Health Group and offers the services of very dedicated Doctors.

February 1993 saw the formation of the MFCCT which had the goal to raise funds to build a 16 bed Home on the site of the Postmaster’s house adjacent to the Medical Centre. Generous financial support came from the ASB Community Trust, the Lottery Commission and many others. The building process commenced in January 1994 and the Rest Home as it is today was opened on the 16th July 1994.

On the 1st April 1998 this trust completed settlement to take over the Maungaturoto Retirement Village from The Kaipara District Council. The KDC had been administering the village since the early 80s when the then Otamatea County took over the administration from the Maungaturoto Rotary Club who were instrumental in the conception of the project following the offer of land donated by the late Mr and Mrs L. Ball.

In June 1999, in response to community demand following the departure of the last bank from our town, a money exchange was established near our resthome for banking and cash facilities for the residents and visitors of Maungaturoto. Our Trust has administered this facility with the help of two community representatives. Unfortunately, due to the increased use of internet banking, the money exchange now had to close.

Our retirement village which is today known as RIVERVIEW Resthome & Village has now 13 1-bedroom units suitable for singles or couples. Retired persons over the age of 55 who are capable of self dependence are eligible for these units. (Dependence level 1 or less, discretion of the manager). The rent is $135 (at present) per week and currently there is a substantial waiting list. It is anticipated that some care services will be available at cost from the Rest Home like for example a meal service.

In February 2001, the construction commenced on four OYO units situated on a recently purchased adjoining property belonging to the Powell family. These units were completed and all sold by May 2001.

In August 2002, the trust purchased another adjoining property (Cullen) to meet further residential demand. Four further OYO units were built and all sold on completion. In January 2011, the development has commenced on a further adjoining property (purchased in 2004) to build another six OYO units. There are plans for future expansion of the Rest Home as required.

Our trustees are all local people and many have been on our board since its inception and are giving their time willingly to this worthwhile community project.
